Prevention (Diversion)
Diverting families from becoming homeless in the first place with Shelter Diversion program funding.
With more than 40% of Americans a $400 expense away from financial distress, the threat of crisis looms closely for too many families. Preventing families from spiraling into homelessness is an essential part of the Family Promise mission.
In March of 2020 Family Promise of Greater Concord was 1 of 10 Family Promise Affiliates chosen for a Diversion pilot program. This pilot was funded through Synchrony Bank in partnership with Family Promise National and has proven to be an incredible resource for struggling families in the Concord community.
Our ongoing Partners in Progress Diversion Program is designed to avoid shelter altogether. The beneficiaries of this service are families that are struggling economically and are at very high risk of becoming homeless.
Shelter Diversion is a strategy that prevents homelessness at the front door of the homelessness response system by helping people identify immediate and alternative housing arrangements and, if necessary, connecting them with services and financial assistance to help them return to permanent housing. Every effort should be made to divert clients to other housing solutions at their first contact with the homelessness response system.

Decrease in the number of homeless families with quick sustainable results in most cases.

Decrease in the demand on shelter beds leaving space for those that cannot be diverted.
Benefit 3 of Diversion
Decrease in cost. On average, diversion is one third the cost of shelter.
Benefit 4 of Diversion
Decrease in youth and young adults from entering a cycle of homelessness.
