Diversion & Prevention

Family Promise works to prevent homelessness before it happens. By providing critical support and resources, we help families find alternative housing solutions, keeping them out of emergency shelters whenever possible.

Preventing homelessness is not only compassionate—it’s smart policy. Children who experience homelessness are 20% less likely to graduate high school than their peers, and the trauma of losing housing can have lasting effects. Our Diversion and Prevention Program empowers families to stay in stable housing by exploring creative solutions, such as staying with relatives or securing temporary housing until a permanent home is found.

When a family’s housing is at risk, we step in to provide:

  • Case management and community support

  • Rental assistance and security deposits

  • Utility support

  • Landlord mediation

  • Housing location services

  • Transportation assistance (gas cards, vehicle repairs)

For families who have already lost their housing, we work to provide safe alternatives to shelter, including:

  • Temporary hotel/motel stays

  • Payments for rent in arrears or security deposits

  • Landlord mediation and housing location

  • Customized solutions that build on a family’s strengths

By addressing housing instability before it becomes a crisis, we help families avoid the trauma of homelessness and build a more secure future.
